Work is starting immediately on temporary shops on the old Canterbury Long Market site, five years after the centre was destroyed by German bombs. A tender of £17,439 from builders G. H. Denne has been accepted for 22 shops, which should be completed by the end of the year, with the first two ready in May. The council is to undertake the care of the recently discovered Roman pavement in Butchery Lane.
