A loco was required at short notice at Ramsgate station. In order to raise steam in time, a liberal quantity of oil was used in addition to coal. The mixture was ignited, producing a large smoke screen. Holidaymakers, largely clad in white dresses, scattered and taxi drivers rushed to protect their upholstery. After ten minutes, the offender steamed proudly away.
