The 4.56pm Cannon St – Ramsgate express, hauled by Bulleid Pacific 34066 Spitfire , collides with another train in heavy fog at Lewisham, killing 92 and injuring 173, and destroys a bridge. The driver had passed a red signal, due to poor visibility from the cab in the fog.
