Leslie Ashman, a 43 year old nurseyman from Ditton, has been awarded the BEM for stopping a runaway train on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway last August. The driver had become unconscious through banging his head on a bridge. A girl in the first carrriage alerted Mr Ashman, travelling in the second carriage, who then climbed on top of the carriages and crawled along to the engine, and stopped it over 2 miles. He was also presented with a double-built cane sea fishing rod by the railway company.
