A new telephone exchange opens in Ashford to cope with increasing demand. Capable of serving 2000 subscribers, it is of the ‘Central Battery’ type, meaning no batteries are required in subscribers’ premises. There are 68 circuits connecting the exchange to London and nearby towns and villages.
