Swiss engineer Jukes Jaeger has developed proposals for two bridges between Calais and Deal, each carrying a double railway line and a roadway for motor lorries. Additionally he proposes a canal between Herne Bay and Deal to make the continent more accessible, and saving barges a 56 mile trip. The canal could be protected by a lattice of strong metal nets in time of war.
