Fireman from all over East Kent raced to Canterbury Cathedral as flames leapt from the roof over the south nave aisle. The fire was put out in 12 minutes. At 8am the next day, 86 year old Dean, Dr Hewlett Johnson climbed 100 feet to inspect the damage, caused by failure of the floodlight system.
