Canterbury MP Sir William Wayland, addressing his supporters at a garden party, said Britain needed to increase national defence forces, and referred to the rise of Fascism in Germany and Italy being the result of socialist misgovernment sowing seeds of dissatisfaction. In a veiled attack on the Dean of Canterbury, Dr Hewlett Johnson, he said clerics should not step into the political arena, but should confine themselves to what was their obvious duty, the cure of souls.
