In front of a congregation of over 3,000, the Rev. H. R. L. ‘Dick’ Sheppard was installed as the 34th Dean of Canterbury during Evensong. Against King George V’s wishes, he had volunteered as a chaplain on the Western Front, but was invalided out after 2 months due to exhaustion and shellshock. His experiences made him a life long pacificist, and contributed to his resignation as Dean in 1931, and his death aged 57 in 1937.
