An SOS broadcast in the first news for Mr Joseph White, of Canterbury, whose father was stated to be dangerously ill in Lincolnshire was successful, and Mr White travelled the next day to be with him. Such personal SOS messages started in 1923, and the BBC stopped broadcasting them in the 1990s with the advent of mobile phones.
