Queen Victoria and Prince Albert drove through Deal to Walmer Castle to holiday as guest of the Duke of Wellington. Residents, given the day off, gave them a raptuous welcome after their 9 hour coach journey from Windsor. The Queen avoided her usual holiday destination of Brighton owing to an outbreak of scarlet fever.
