Thanet’s first snail eating contest was held at the Castle Keep Hotel as part of Broadstairs French Fortnight. Local people, together with celebrities and French visitors were tested for their speed and finesse. Each contestant was given a plate of 12 snails, and allowed to eat them with the help of wine and Frech bread. After several heats, the winner was Frank Thompson, a lecturer at Thanet Technical College, who received a bottle of champagne.
