Christopher Marlowe, dramatist, baptized at the church of St. George the Martyr, Canterbury. His work included “Doctor Faustus,” “Tamburlaine,” “The Jew of Malta,” and other plays. He was murdered at 29 in a Deptford tavern and was suspected of being a spy to the Continent on behalf of the Crown.
