Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory was launched at Chatham amid great celebration. Dockworkers were given the day off, and the town took on the air of a fairground. All Victory’s oak timbers were at least 100 years old, equipped with 100 guns, and had taken 6 years and £15,000 to build.
