James Dowling received 14 days’ hard labour for assault in the Dane John on Charles Leman, beadle for 33 years. Dowling had been lying on a bank with his trousers undone and exposing himself opposite Mr. Surry’s house. Mr Leman roused the defendant, who was asleep, and called his attention to his attire, but in return the defendant made use of bad language and threatened to “knock his head off.’’ He then hit witness in the mouth with his clenched fist before doing his trousers up.
