Denge Woods, known locally as Penny Pot Woods near Petham had the dubious honour of being hit by the first German bombs of the war in England. Villagers heard thuds during the night and the next day boys exploring the woods discovered craters and blasted trees. Local boys spent whole of the day excitedly fetching shrapnel for the police.
