Coal from Snowdown colliery, Kent’s first commercial pit was raised for the first time, from a depth of 1370ft. Eventually reaching 3000ft and yielding 800 tonnes of coal a week, it was dubbed ‘Dante’s Inferno’ because of the heat and humidity, and considered Britain’s worst colliery to work at.
