A 30s train journey turned into a circus as 450 Conservatives from Ashford and Folkestone visited Bertram Mills in Olympia. Leaving Folkestone at 4.25pm, the engine slowly ran out of puff, and an additional engine attached at 6.55pm, holding up the Golden Arrow. At Orpington and Factory Junction, Wandsworth, additional drivers had to be taken on with the necessary route knowledge. Finally two engines, two firemen, four drivers, 11 coaches and 3 dining cars arrived 94 minutes late. The excursionists took their seats as the opening parade was ending.
