The Dockyard church at Sheerness, dating from 1828, was destroyed by fire, a sailor named Kew losing his life. It was rebuilt, and served the community until the 1970s, when it was deconsecrated and became a sports / youth centre. It suffered another major fire in 2001 and has since been restored to its full original glory, and now functions as an enterprise centre and cultural hub for the community.
