Passionate swimmer Michael Randall stole a telegraph pole by sawing it off at the base in Rainham. In court, he explained he had intended to build a diving stage due to lack of facilities. In view of his good character, Magistrates dismissed the case, but ordered him to pay 3 guineas for the pole.
