SS Montrose, intended as a blockship in Dover Harbour, broke loose unmanned from moorings within the harbour during a gale, drifted through the entrance and grounded on the Goodwin Sands 2 days later, breaking into two. Murderer Dr Crippen had escaped across the Atlantic on SS Montrose 4 years earlier.
