After the announcement of a beard growing competition for the local Festival of Britain celebrations, Canterbury barber Peter Beaver decided to grow his ‘full set’. His staff insisted with a name like Beaver he could hardly fail to participate, and he was fed up with customers asking him if it would affect trade. To answer them, he pinned a notice in the window, ‘Beards Trimmed, 1s’.
