Barmaid Maria Healy (28) of the Cherry Tree, Canterbury was hailed a hero after saving 3 men overcome by a carbon dioxide leak in the cellar. Harold Hopkins (52) was overcome when changing a barrel, followed by David Haley (24), a Corporal in the Queen’s Regiment, and finally customer Paul Rooke (24) from London. Each man had gone down to aid another. Finally Maria managed to haul Paul out with the aid of two men, and police, one of which was also overcome, helped with the other two. Two were kept in hospital overnight for observation. Landlady Freda Dorras had missed the turmoil – she was taking her dog for a walk.
