1940 Pilot Heinz Escherhaus took off in his Me109 on a reconnaissance mission over Kent. At 25,000ft, his life forcing himraft behind his seat inflated forcing him onto the control panel. In regaining control, he blew the engine, and crash landed at Vensons Farm in Eastry. Not a shot was fired, The official RAF report stated ‘This pilot crashed after being attacked from behind by his inflatable dingy’!
