“The Dover Stage” hotel was opened on Townwall Street by the Mayor. Costing £60,000, the 6 floors balanced on V shaped struts incorporating 42 rooms. Public rooms, including a ballroom and two bars proved popular for dinners, dances and weddings. However, its small number of rooms were not cost effective, and it was demolished in 1988.
